Marketing is changing at a rapid pace these days, with a huge amount of advancements in technology taking place on an almost daily basis. We find this all really exciting – we are currently venturing into the world of VR for example – but we understand that the variety of choice you have can be quite overwhelming for most business owners. When it comes to getting your brand out there and at the forefront of people’s minds there are lots of mind-blowing opportunities for you, but how do you decide what is best for your company?
Well, that’s where we come in. We are here to help and guide you through the multiple options there are to market your business successfully. That is why we have pulled together this post to give you a quick overview of some of the newest technologies that are trending at the moment, which may just be what you need to deliver memorable experiences to your customers and keep them coming back for more.
Augmented Reality (or AR) is quite often confused with Virtual Reality (VR) but the two are very different. AR offers users the opportunity of viewing the real-world in a way where it has been augmented with additional computer-generated content such as graphics, video or sound. AR, therefore, is the slight modification of reality compared to VR which is the complete replacement of reality. The most popular AR experience to date has been Pokemon GO, where players could search for virtual reality animals (Pokemon) in real-world locations.
The benefit that AR offers to a business is that they can offer their customers an enhanced version of reality, in a way in which is easy for them to adapt to. AR can be experienced on a smartphone, for example, whereas VR needs the customer to own a headset before they can take part.
Drones are aircraft either controlled by ‘pilots’ from the ground or increasingly, autonomously following a pre-programmed mission. They were initially developed for military use, but their ability to follow individuals at a height and capture breathtaking overhead shots has quickly led to them being adopted by marketers in order to film amazing views that just weren’t available before – and that is perfect for creating viral content to share on social media. In fact, commercial drones are the fastest growing sector of the drone market.
Internet of Things (IoT)
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the name given to the process of connecting objects through internet data systems and tools, and then these objects being able to communicate. So it covers things like your heating and lights coming on when your car is 10 minutes from home, your fridge ordering milk when it senses that you are running low, and you being able to open your front gate by tapping an app on your phone.
In terms of marketing, we are still in the early stages of seeing how the IoT will have an impact on it, but creating connections between products and customers, allowing them to connect products and services easily is a great basis for us to create some amazing experiences for them.
Live Streaming is the process of transmitting a live video over the internet in real-time. You will already have some experience of it if you use Instagrampokemon Stories, Facebook Live or Snapchat. A lot of marketing professionals are already using it to extend the reach of any events that they are involved in, as it allows them to make the broadcast really personal – and the fact that you can watch it live makes it immediate and exclusive – both things that are hard to capture with other forms of marketing.
Perhaps the most important new technology when it comes to marketing, but one which is taking longer to take off because of the difficulties involved in making it a shared experience. VR needs users to wear a headset (also known as a Head Mounted Display or HMD) in order to enter a computer-generated world. The possibilities this offers to marketers, is the chance to take customers to places they would never otherwise get to go – such as the inside of a fridge, or travelling through space. The experience creating possibilities are endless.
As you can see, there are a lot of things happening out there in the world of technology at the moment, and there are huge opportunities for brands to use various techniques to engage with their customers on a global scale.
