Something is stirring in the world of social media! November seems to be a month this year that some of the major social media companies have decided to roll out some big (and some not so big) changes. In case you have found it challenging to keep on top of what’s what, and who knows, you may even have missed some of the announcements! So here are some of the fundamental changes which have happened over the last four weeks:

Facebook

  • Facebook is no longer sharing promotional organic posts. Having started making changes to affect brands reach back in December 2013, Facebook recently conducted a “survey”. The results of the said survey have encouraged Facebook to use its Edgerank Algorithm to determine which brand posts it deems overly promotional, and these posts won’t appear in people’s newsfeeds. So, now is the time to start investing in your blog and your email marketing programme, and exploring Facebook Ad’s (if you haven’t already). Facebook Ad’s still offers the best opportunity for you to target your advertising, and also measure it to determine your ROI.
  • Tied in with the above change, is an option that Facebook has rolled out to all users, enabling them to control better what appears in their newsfeed. Under News Feed Settings, users can now see the most noticeable pages, groups and people who have appeared in their news feed for the last seven. This makes it easier to follow, un-follow and hide people and pages from your feed.
  • Last but not least, Facebook has also updated its terms and conditions. One major step they have taken is to introduce an interactive guide to your privacy settings – which shows you exactly how to control what others can see about you, how others interact with you, and what you see on your newsfeed. This is an excellent, clear and concise guide which is easy to read. Good job, Facebook!

Twitter

  • Great news for small businesses from Twitter. They have now introduced a new app called “Twitter Small Business Planner” – available for both iPhones and Android Phones. This useful app includes tutorials and features such as daily calendar, themed agenda, blog articles and ebooks. Downloading this should help to give you a more strategic view of your Twitter Marketing.

Instagram

  • One of the most long-awaited improvement has finally been made to Instagram! Users can now edit their captions! Yay! This means if you make a typo and don’t spot it until after you have posted, you no longer have to delete the post (or live with the typo)! You can click the “Edit” option and make your desired changes. Find out more about this change on Instagram’s official blog.
  • A change that there are mixed reactions too is the introduction of ad’s on Instagram. We’re not surprised that this has finally happened, but intrigued that they are video ads! Instagram (which is owned by Facebook don’t forget) has struck a deal to show 15-second auto-play video ad’s from Disney, Activision, Lancome and Banana Republic.

LinkedIn

  • An often neglected site; LinkedIn has introduced quite a few changes this month. In a move that some say likens it more to Facebook, LinkedIn users can now add a cover photo to their LinkedIn profile. Not a significant change maybe, but an excellent spot to promote your small business by putting in a call to action that speaks to the need of your ideal client.
  • LinkedIn allowed users to start posting content earlier in a year, but last month Search Wilderness and OKDork analysed the 3,000 most popular articles shared on LinkedIn – that revealed some fantastic information! Some examples are: titles should be between 40 and 49 characters long; posts should be divided into five headings to make them more readable, and posts should contain eight Read more of their incredible (and beneficial) findings here
  • LinkedIn has also recently introduced a new app called “LinkedIn Connected” (for iPhone). The aim of this app is to enable users to keep more easily in touch with what is happening in their network, for example, birthdays, work anniversaries or job changes.

That is our round-up of the most recent social media changes. Keep checking back, as we will update this post as more changes occur (as they are bound too!)
