At the start of the year, we like to take some time to reflect on what has happened in the previous 12 months, and where we think things are headed in the next twelve months. So, we have put together this post on where we think Social Media is headed in 2015, and what challenges this may bring!

Twitter will lose market share for business use

There are so many people tweeting at the moment that many messages just get lost in the noise. Twitter’s audience growth momentum is also slowing down drastically, although more teenagers seem to be engaging with it due to its introduction of “Vine” (a short video platform). Like most social media platforms these days, Twitter challenge to businesses is that it wants to make money so is focussing on paid advertising. Saying this, Twitter is still useful for curating other people’s content and distributing your own so don’t rule it out just yet.

Facebook will continue to focus on People & Relationships

Facebooks recent decision to make marketing orientated content less visible in people’s newsfeeds means it will continue to remain a people focussed social media platform. It does, however, seem to be losing the teenagers and 20-year-olds who were its biggest fans, and so its demographic points towards the middle age market which will affect its audience growth and ad revenues.

As a business, you should understand your target audience thoroughly, so that you can target them on Facebook with content, photos and videos which will engage them and prompt them to interact with you. If you really want to make a success of Facebook as a marketing tool, then you are going to have to reach into your pockets and allocate budget and resources to Facebook Ads in order to maximise your reach.

Instagram will continue to grow and improve

Last year, Instagram overtook Facebook in terms of the number of photographs shared, making it the most popular photo-sharing platform on the web. We believe it will continue to grow as it takes advantage of the improved photography and video technology which is now widely available on smart devices. The popularity of Instagram does suggest that it won’t be long before it will develop a financial model which will more than likely mean it will begin to charge to advertise. Instagram should be an integral part of your marketing strategy if you are a product-based business, and you should be active on this platform daily sharing pictures of your products, employees and customers.

Pinterest to become the Social Selling Destination

Pinterest is already a great source of traffic for both B2B and B2C businesses as it has become the destination for people surfing and saying “I want this”! Pinterest’s existing ability to drive sales means that it may become an acquisition target for either Google or Amazon. Pinterest may also develop an income stream from affiliated businesses. A little-known fact about Pinterest is that if you include a price on your pin information, Pinterest emails any user who pinned your pin to tell them when the price changes – a great tool for reaching non-subscribers!
