As a search engine optimisation company we bandy about the term SEO on a daily basis, but what does it really mean? SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is the name given to activities that help your company’s website to appear at the top of Google (as well as bing and yahoo).

So, if you sell shoes, and you want to sell more shoes online than ‘Shoes R Us’, then you need to think about optimising your website.

What are these activities?

SEO is changing all the time but a couple of things remain consistent.  Search engines like well designed, original (you’ll be penalised for stealing someone else’s work), and error-free webpages, filled with high-quality content.

How highly your website is listed on search engines, is decided by software programs (known as bots).  They scan the web, reading websites and assessing their quality.  If your website is recognised as being of high quality and content-rich, it will appear higher up on the search listings than other websites.

  • Keywords are king – You need to understand the words that people type into search engines when they’re looking for your product or service.  You then need to make sure that you use them in the right place, and with the right frequency.  Think about using them in your main body content, titles and URLs for a start.
  • Keep refreshing your webpages – Upload videos, blogs, reviews etc. – essentially any high quality, error-free and relevant content, and do it regularly. This will help to make sure people keep coming back to your website, and that search engines recognise you as an expert.
  • Use good quality links – Once you’ve started to create it, you can link to your own content.  Also, link externally to high-quality material elsewhere on the web.  A word of warning though – think Quality Not Quantity. Experts don’t link to poor quality pages.

  • In 2016, UK online sales exceeded £130 BILLION – that’s a 16% increase on the spend in 2015. This trend is set to continue year on year.

So, if you want to sell online, or attract customers online, whether you’re a service provider, a paperclip emporium, or a fine dining restaurant, you need your website to be at the top of search engine listings.
