So, last week Twitter was all of a twitter, with the hashtag #RIPTwitter trending worldwide. Millions of people were venting their rage at Twitter because they announced daring plans that will change the order of tweets on user’s newsfeeds. Sounds silly we know, but this really panicked some people. You would have thought the world was coming to an end!

The panic all started when Buzzfeed published an article suggesting that Twitter was going to start showing people tweets based on what their network algorithm deemed was more relevant to you, rather than the current set-up, which shows you all the tweets of everyone you follow in chronological order. Basically, this new update threatens live streaming – which is the basis of twitter. As a result, Twitter users began to express their outrage, accusing Twitter of effectively signing its own death warrant.

The uproar was so great that Twitter’s CEO, Jack Dorsey, ended up tweeting a response, which essentially said that Buzzfeed had got it wrong! According to his statement, Twitter never planned to mess with user’s timelines, and it definitely wouldn’t now they knew how strongly everyone felt about it!

But, are these updates the right thing to do? As a digital marketing agency, we know that change is the only constant when it comes to technology. We’re just surprised that these changes to Twitter’s live stream have come at a time when other social media networks, such as Facebook, are implementing updates to emulate Twitter’s live stream. Ironic much?

These updates are a risky move by Twitter, but they are currently losing market shares and revenue is down. Perhaps this is why they are introducing updates like promoted video ads, to increase revenue. And can we blame them? These updates may not be the end of Twitter, they could be the very opposite. They may give Twitter a unique edge and help it to continue its dominance as one of the biggest social networks.

Think of it this way. Would you rather Twitter made some changes and evolved, or disappeared from our screens altogether? We’ll be watching the updates carefully and are excited to see what the future holds for Twitter.
